Peter Ivan Edwards

Peter Ivan Edwards creates compositions on his own and in collaboration with other musicians. When creating works on his own, he uses algorithms and different forms of probability to generate the behavior of musical personalities. These works are about energy, the push and pull of characters manifested in sound and form. The collaboratively created works are structured improvisations wherein the general features are determined but the details are decided in performance. These works explore the use of signal processing to create new sounds and extended instruments as well as ways in which the computer can be an interactive partner in performance.

He composes both acoustic and electro-acoustic works, but regardless of the medium, the works are created on the computer. Whether it is writing computer programs to realize musical material, working with sophisticated virtual instruments to model and sculpt music into its final state, or creating unique signal processing chains that augment the nature of an acoustic instrument, the computer is an essential partner. Through these artistic activities, he seeks to explore our understanding of the expressive and communicative possibilities of sound.

His work has been performed throughout the world by numerous ensembles, including the Ensemble Interface, Mutare Ensemble, Ensemble SurPlus, Ensemble Chronophonie, Ensemble Ascolta, Ensemble Selisih, the Noise Ensemble, the mmm… collective, and the La Jolla Symphony at major international festivals including the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für neue Musik, the MATA Festival, Donaueschinger Musiktage, and Wien Modern. His debut CD Object Lessons is available on Albany Records.

Edwards was born in New York in 1973, studied composition at Northwestern University; UC, San Diego; and the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. His principle composition teachers were Chaya Czernowin and Nicolaus A. Huber. He currently lives in Singapore where he teaches music composition and computer music at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

He is a co-founder of Zero Crossing, a duo dedicated to works for percussion and live electronics, as well as a co-founder of the former Ang Mo Faux, which released the CD Improvisations on the Palace of Lights label.

He shares his work through Timepost Music.
