Nathanael KOH

Nathanael Koh has a great love for music theory and composition. He writes a wide range of music ranging from different cultures, genres and eras.  He is also a St John Youth Cadet and MENSA member of Singapore and New Zealand.

Born in 2010 with perfect pitch, he is the youngest in the world to obtain the Licentiate Diploma in Music Composition (Honours), Trinity College Diploma in Music Theory (AMusTCL), ABRSM Grade 8 in Music Theory, St Cecilia Grade 8 Musicianship and 2 distinctions in O level A and E Math at the age of 9.

He composed his 1st full orchestra piece, ‘Tea Party’ at the age of 8 and was premiered at the Victoria Concert Hall in Dec 2019. In 2019 and 2020, he was the youngest finalist for the Commonwealth International Composition Award (UK). For consecutive years in 2018 and 2019, he won first prize in the Composition Competition organised by the Institute of Registered Music Teachers, NZ.  His pieces, Perception of Pi and Pixes were also performed in UK and NZ respectively.

In 2020, he initiated in bringing musicians from New Zealand, Australia and Singapore to virtually perform his composition, HOPE, to instil solidarity against COVID. He was given a written letter by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to thank him for his music and initiative. Recognizing his talent in music, New Zealand's Ministry of Education awarded him with the Gifted Learners Scholarship for 2019 and 2020.

He is presently the Composer-in-Residence for Kids’ Philharmonic Orchestra in Singapore.

In his free time, Nathanael's many other interests include Mathematics, Chemistry, German and Crafting.
