What does it take to compose to picture? How do you get started?

In this workshop, Award-Winning Singapore Film Composer Alex Oh will lead you to explore the various areas in the industry including writing for TV commercials and film.

With his vast experience of composing for more than 20 feature films, Alex will cover the necessities needed for any beginner as well as advanced learners to write specifically for visual media. Gain an insight into the world of film scoring and the processes needed to start composing. Explore various compositional techniques and musical concepts to expand your sonic language. Learn the tools needed to be a composer and apply them to your own craft.

You will also get to see sample files of existing works to gain good insight!

Whether you are a beginner or someone who is interested to start composing for the visual media, this will surely be a fruitful session for all.


Topics covered include:

  1. Equipment Setup ~ Introduction to DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and other basics such as using a MIDI keyboard to create, play and record software instruments.

  2. Process of Composing ~ Basics of approaching composing for visual media such as pacing, tension and release, themes, music register and timbre.

  3. Writing a Cue ~ the aspects of writing a cue such as referencing the guide track, finding hit points, choosing suitable instruments, writing/layering harmonic lines and experimenting with various timbral qualities.


ABOUT ALEX OH


Alex has scored 22 feature films in Singapore, Australia, China and the United States, with genres ranging from comedy, family-oriented drama, action and horror. Past films include Bait, Faeryville, Rule #1 and The Maid. He is also the founder of White Noise Music, an audio post production company.


With two decades of experience, he is one of Singapore’s most prolific and versatile film composer. His philosophy is simple – To tell stories through music.
