The first session ‘Meet-the-Musicians’ on the 24 January 2016 at Aliwal Arts Centre went very well. We have 16 interested participants from 10 years old to 23 years old!
Clarence Tan, the music director of the forum welcomed the participants. Tan Qing Lun introduced a variety of Chinese flutes and the bansuri and their respective techniques. Muhammad Firdaus Mohamad together with Hanafi Idrus presented the types of singing styles that are specific to the gambus when used as an accompaniment. Bingling Wu and Chen Chia-Min joined forces as they demonstrated a host of string techniques on the violin and cello respectively. Colin Tan showed the colourful register of the clarinet. Finally Robert Casteels, the mentor composer for the forum gave tips on composing.
The session was a good 3-hour stretch, and the young participants survived! For the next 2 months, these participants will be furiously composing away.
We look forward to receiving their scores by 1 March 2016. The panel will verify that the submitted pieces are playable and make a selection (if necessary) for a Reading Workshop on 17 April 2016. At this workshop, the musicians will read the music and the panel will be able to provide comments and points for further considerations. By the end of the workshop, the panel will make a selection of pieces for the concert on 12 June 2016. Between the Reading Workshop and the Concert, composers of the selected pieces for concert will be able to refine their work before the first rehearsal in the first week of June.
Two important dates to take note: 17 April 2016 Sunday 4 30pm onwards – Reading Workshop 12 June 2016 Sunday 8pm – Concert
This Forum aims to provide opportunities for young musicians to write music and have their pieces worked and shared. Through the Forum, the Composers’ Society of Singapore wants to widen music participation in the youths of Singapore as well as engage meaningfully with the various music communities in Singapore, composers and musicians, educators, students and members of the public.
