Call for Submissions – Franz Schubert and Modern Music International Competition 2020 at KUG (Graz,



The Composers Society of Singapore (CSS) has received a call-for-works for a composition competition by the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG) in Graz, Austria, at year 2020. Read below:


Composition Competitions LIED and PIANO TRIO 2020


On the occasion of the International Competition Franz Schubert and Modern Music, which will take place in February 2021 at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the university organizes composition competitions in order to expand the repertoire for Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied) and Trio for Piano, Violin and Violoncello.

We aim to encourage young composers to participate in these composition competitions, and would like to invite you to spread the word among young artists in your sphere of influence.


Categories


The competition invites composers from all nations and those who are stateless to take part.

For piano trio (piano + violin + cello)

Age limit: born after February 27, 1981 (38 years) Max. duration: 15 min Submission deadline: February 26, 2020 (W) Prize: € 5000 Jury: The jury, chaired by Chia Chou, consists of internationally renowned personalities: Mark Andre, Lucas Fels, Clemens Gadenstätter, Clemens Nachtmann, N.N., N.N.

For Lieder (duo for voice and piano)

Age limit: born after May 1, 1981 (38 years) Specified duration: 3-4 min Submission deadline:April 30, 2020 (Th) Prize: € 2500

Jury: The jury, chaired by Joseph Breinl, consists of internationally renowned personalities. Will be announced soon.


There is a choice of 12 poems to be set to music – of which either a poem in full length or fragments may be used. Six poems are by the Hungarian authoress Kinga Tóth, a writer-in-residence in Graz from September 2018 to August 2019. The other six poems are by Alessandra Molina from Cuba, who lived in Graz as “writer in exile” from August 2006 to August 2007.



Additional benefits

  • The award-winning compositions for the two categories will be incorporated into the repertoire of the categories “Trio for Piano, Violin and Violoncello” and “Duo for Voice and Piano (Lied)” respectively, as compulsory pieces for the 11th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music”. For each category, in the event of two prizewinning works, the choice will be left to the participants. In February 2021 the prizewinning works will be (premier) performed.*

  • The 11th International Competition “Franz Schubert and Modern Music” will be recorded. There will be a master recording of the prizewinning work performed by a selected ensemble.*

  • The prizewinners will be invited to take part in the award ceremony. Travel and hotel expenses will be paid by the competition. In the event of the prize being split, performance of the work during the 11th FS&MM competition and its recording cannot be guaranteed.
