YENG Pway Ngon (1947–2021) was one of Singapore’s most prominent Chinese writers. The Cultural Medallion recipient left us with a rich legacy of Chinese literature, with a body of work that spanned novels and poetry. In this poetry recital with piano and violin accompaniment by prominent young composers TAN Yuting (CSS Student Member) and DING Jian Han, award-winning academic-poet TAN Chee Lay will read from YENG’s early works till his latest publication Stones, which was published in 2020.
In collaboration with the Speak Mandarin Campaign.
One of the most highly-acclaimed writers of his generation, scholar-writer TAN Chee Lay is an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Education (NIE) by day, while practising Chinese creative writing, calligraphy and painting by night. A founding member of Poetry Festival Singapore and a judge of the Cultural Medallion and SEA Write Award, he was conferred the Young Artist Award, Singapore Youth Award and Golden Point Award.
Singaporean composer TAN Yuting writes music that explores the interaction of different sounds to form unique harmonies and textures. Her past collaborations include performances with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, Ensemble Dal Niente and Ensemble Soundinitiative. Tan also enjoys working with artists from other fields.
DING Jian Han is a Singaporean composer who draws inspiration from his varied non-musical interests. Recently, he has adapted Hollywood action film editing techniques into his composition process, incorporating self-created short films in his musical compositions. Ding also enjoys songwriting and has composed and arranged music for two full-length musicals.
