Lien Boon Hua
LIEN Boon Hua is a young conductor from Singapore and prizewinner at the 2nd Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition, 10th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Conducting Competition and 12th Aram Khachaturian International Conducting Competition. He is currently featured as one of two conductors on the Peter Eötvös Foundation Mentoring Program 2019 and also leads OpusNovus, the new music ensemble at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore.

Lien was the Assistant Conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice (NOSPR) from 2016 to 2018, and also served as Musikalische Assistenz to the Richard-Strauss-Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. He has assisted conductors such as Alexander Liebreich, Lawrence Foster, Giancarlo Guerrero, Manfred Honeck, Cristian Măcelaru, Leonard Slatkin and Yan Pascal Tortelier.

Highlights of his 2018/19 season includes debuts with NFM WrocÅ‚aw Philharmonic, Kraków Philharmonic, Polish Baltic Philharmonic, Danubia Orchestra Óbuda, MAV Symphony Orchestra and UMZE Ensemble; concerts with NOSPR at the International Mozartiana Festival in GdaÅ„sk and Katowice; and invitations to participate at international conducting competitions in Mexico City and Budapest.

Lien has worked with prominent orchestras around the world, including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Festival Strings Lucerne, MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, among others.

He also participated in masterclasses at prominent festivals with distinguished conductors, such as Bernard Haitink at the Lucerne Festival, Marin Alsop and Cristian Măcelaru at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, and Stefan Asbury at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He was the only international participant invited to the 4th Seoul Philharmonic Conducting Masterclass, where he received guidance from Markus Stenz and Thierry Fischer. He also conducted in the INTERAKTION Dirigentenwerkstatt des Kritischen Orchesters with musicians from leading German orchestras and was named an inaugural Mahler Conducting Fellow for the Colorado MahlerFest XXIX.

In addition, Lien is the Music Director of the award-winning Orchestra Collective, one of Singapore’s finest wind ensembles, and served as the Eastman Conducting Fellow of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra from 2014 to 2016. His artistic achievements have earned him the Walter Hagen Conducting Prize, Bruno Walter Conducting Scholarship and was named winner of the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music Call for Conductor as well as The American Prize in Orchestral Conducting.

Currently based in Singapore, Lien received his doctorate in orchestral conducting at the Eastman School of Music, where his mentors include Neil Varon, Brad Lubman and Mark Scatterday. He holds conducting and performance degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, with additional studies at Peabody Conservatory.

Outside of his formal training, Lien has also actively participated in masterclasses with Carl St. Clair, David Effron, Peter Eötvös, Leon Fleisher, Mark Gibson, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Heinz Holliger, Leonid Korchmar, Hannu Lintu, Manuel Nawri, Nicolás Pasquet, Timothy Reynish, Johannes Schaefli, Gerard Schwarz, Yuri Simonov, Mark Stringer and Osmo Vänskä.
