Lee Jia Yi

Lee Jia Yi (b. 1996) is a Singaporean composer currently interested in writing music that explores combinations of instrumental timbre and colour. As a composer who “has her own ideas” (RTHK Radio 4), she often uses a single gesture as the basis of constructing her pieces, and her music often has an emphasis on textures and structure. She enjoys the process of collaborating with performers, and is currently working with some of her instrumentalist friends to create solo pieces that showcase their musical abilities. Some of her pieces also explore indeterminacy, where some aspects of the music are left to the performers’ decisions, resulting in multiple possibilities and a unique performance each time the piece is performed.

Jia Yi’s compositions have been performed in Singapore, Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Croatia, France, and the United States; she has also worked with ensembles such as Ensemble Multilatérale (Paris, France), Trio SurPlus (Freiburg, Germany), Ensemble Phoenix (Basel, Switzerland) and Ensemble Linea (Strasbourg, France). Her music has been heard in festivals such as Etchings Festival (France), soundSCAPE Festival (Italy) and Asian Composers League Festival (Vietnam). In 2018, she was commissioned by the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and her orchestra piece Bloom was performed in Singapore as well as on their concert tour to Guangzhou and Hong Kong, as part of the Asia-Pacific Youth Symphony Orchestra Festival.

Jia Yi recently completed her Bachelor of Music with Honours (Highest Distinction) in Composition at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore, and her past composition teachers include A/P Ho Chee Kong, A/P Peter Edwards and Adeline Wong. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music in Composition at Peabody Conservatory, studying with Felipe Lara, while also serving as a Graduate Assistant in Music Theory.

Apart from composing, Jia Yi plays the trumpet. She often conducts her own pieces and has studied conducting with A/P Jason Lai. In her free time, she likes to travel as much as she can and enjoys a good cup of coffee.
