The Composers Society of Singapore (CSS) would like to showcase and promote the talents of Singapore’s new music practitioners and composers via an unusual perspective: An action camera, attached to the instrument or worn by the performer, will capture the technical challenges and intricacies of the performer close-up (Example 1 | Example 2). This will be complemented with video recordings from a camcorder in order to view the performer from a distance. Such a mix of close-up and distant action aims to encapsulate the creativity of Singaporean composers and open up an unusual way of viewing and listening to musical works.
Works selected will be recorded and then presented digitally on our CSS YouTube channel. Two videos will be made: one for solo viola, one for solo (prepared) piano. These instruments are chosen because of their sheer versatility that can be easily captured by the action camera.
We have invited two performers to join us for this project: Christoven TAN (viola) and Churen LI (piano).
*If you are writing for a prepared piano, or (ADDED 26 Jun 2020) are using extended techniques for the piano, you must inform us and also find a place in Singapore for us to record, as soon as possible. The decision to accept your piano piece still rests with CSS and the performer.
An honorarium will be paid to each composer whose piece gets selected for this project.

This project is supported by the Digital Presentation Grant from the National Arts Council (NAC) of Singapore.
Update on 26 Jun 2020 (F): Added requirement for works for piano with extended techniques. This requirement already exists for works for prepared piano.
